Pam: I've always loved gardening. When I resumed teaching in 1986 in Connecticut, I soon had a school garden club - mostly informal- just some planting of bulbs and perennial plants to "beautify" the grounds. It was great to introduce middle school children to the earth in this way. Just before I retired in June 2009 a colleague thought we should be doing vegetable gardening. And so was born our school vegetable garden project. Workshops, readings, trial and error, begging materials, saying "yes" to any offer for recycled tools, for wood chips, delivery of compost, donations of seeds and seedlings - we began. We planted too much too soon, not enough after the first harvest.... However, we did enjoy the benefits of a local master gardener who offered her advice and "hands-on" expertise. I wish we had followed more of her advice. But beginners make mistakes and learn from them. Then I retired and decided that more schools would benefit from vegetable gardens on-site and I would love to help them get started. Voilà - GIVE - the Green Initiative for Vegetables in Education.
